Recently I was thinking about the concept of stumbling blocks versus stepping stones. Immediately I started to envision a long staircase that was going upwards. As I imagined this scene, two thoughts came to mind. One was that this was a lot of stairs (stumbling blocks). Then two was that at least I had a way to get there (stepping stones). Now walk with me for a moment because I thought this was something worth diving into.
Stumbling Blocks
When I think of something that is a stumbling block, I think of something that is getting in the way. Well, I'm sure that seeing a large staircase could make you feel intimidated enough to think that it was too much to do. Or maybe even to think that these stairs were not even necessary. Honestly, if I saw a huge staircase, I probably would grumble slightly at the sight of it, btu then begin taking the steps needed to go up?
Why?
Although, the steps there would bring on frustration because of my own annoyance with them, I know that they are going to get me to the destination. I need you to catch what I just said. I mentioned that it was my own annoyance meaning my perspective, my feelings etc. That feeling that I was carrying on about would in fact have an impact on my thought process (mindset) towards the situation. We all know that what the mind thinks or believes, actions begin to follow. So, if I see this moment as frustrating, it is going to feel like that the whole way through. Thus, creating a stumbling block. Not necessarily because of the stairs themselves, but because of my own perception.
How we perceive things influences the way that we act outwardly and inwardly. Now if I am like person number two who just begins walking because their destination is at the top. Then I can look at the same set of circumstances move about a bit more freely. It doesn't mean that the challenge of going up the stairs have changed. There is a willingness to accept it as a roadmap that will help me to get to where I am going.
That mindset allows room for creativity, gratitude, and problem solving to come underway. I mention all of those because when the mind is not focused on something negative, I believe there is room for it to see beyond the limitations. Truth be told, when you go upstairs you angle changes. How you saw the scenery from the first step is much different when you are ten steps in. Therefore, your perspective has now broadened. I believe that allows you to be more open to seeing what else is possible.
So, I encourage you to take into account how you are perceiving situations or circumstances that come before you. Before you lead with your emotions. Take a step back and view things from a different angle.
